bigjohnboy Posted February 17, 2008 Report Posted February 17, 2008 hi looking for help took a chance and bought a galaxy 2001 1.9 diesel with 210000 miles and a timming belt that had slipped 4 teeth. striped it down replased 8 hydralic tappets inspected all other parts on sign of any other damage rebuilt with new timming belt+tentsoner+waterpump .starts and runs ok plenty power (now hears the but) still have noise like tappets from top end of engine and on acceleration a roar like intake noise.checked oil pressure ok 5.5bar at 3000rpm hot flushed eng oil three times using 5w40 any ideas Quote
tiny Posted February 17, 2008 Report Posted February 17, 2008 (edited) This reply wont help with your problem, but IIRC at that age it will have a PD engine which must be ran with very specific engine oils. Do a forum search and you will see what I mean. As for the intake noise, have you checked all the intercooler pipework? With having the head off (as Im presuming you have when you say "stripped down") its possible that an intercooler hose has become dislodged or damaged. This is a regular cause of intake roar across a wide range of turbo intercooled cars. Edited February 17, 2008 by tiny Quote
sepulchrave Posted February 17, 2008 Report Posted February 17, 2008 Did you carefully fill and prime the tappets before fitting? Quote
deek Posted February 17, 2008 Report Posted February 17, 2008 hi looking for help took a chance and bought a galaxy 2001 1.9 diesel with 210000 miles and a timming belt that had slipped 4 teeth. striped it down replased 8 hydralic tappets inspected all other parts on sign of any other damage rebuilt with new timming belt+tentsoner+waterpump .starts and runs ok plenty power (now hears the but) still have noise like tappets from top end of engine and on acceleration a roar like intake noise.checked oil pressure ok 5.5bar at 3000rpm hot flushed eng oil three times using 5w40 any ideasThink you may have damaged valves when timing belt slipped. They may not be totaly bent but valve heads could be slightly off line due to valve to piston contact. This will result in the valves not sealing properly on their seats and letting cylinder pressure leak back out into induction tract (hence roaring noise). To confirm this without taking head off, suggest you find someone with a diesel engine compression tester. Good luck and hope I'm wrong, but sounds awfuly similar to my own problem. Is it returning poor mpg even though seems to run fine? Quote
bigjohnboy Posted February 17, 2008 Author Report Posted February 17, 2008 hi deek think you could be right.i have not been driving it long but mpg seems poor and no i did not have the cyl head off. thought it was just tappet noise.i take it then that 8 new valves will cure it or is it worse than that.and thanks very much.and also could tiny tell me what iirc means thanks jr. will check compressions tomorow and let you know Quote
lazyb5 Posted February 17, 2008 Report Posted February 17, 2008 Hi JR I think Deek is right i`ve had 3 cambelts go and all needed new valves usually they bulge the stem then they dont seat right. IIRC means if I remember correctly.hope this helps Quote
zorgman Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 ""hi looking for help took a chance and bought a galaxy 2001 1.9 diesel with 210000 miles and a timming belt that had slipped 4 teeth. striped it down replased 8 hydralic tappets inspected all other parts on sign of any other damage rebuilt with new timming belt+tentsoner+waterpump .starts and runs ok plenty power (now hears the but) still have noise like tappets from top end of engine and on acceleration a roar like intake noise.checked oil pressure ok 5.5bar at 3000rpm hot flushed eng oil three times using 5w40 any ideas"" snap ive got same problems here but i replaced all 8 valves. not sure on your motor if it runs a pump like mine but had to retime it using vag-com as it was way far too advanced. the intake roar ive got as well, have had every pipe off and checked using a high pressure airline on them and no leaks or cracks.what im looking into now is the air box as it seems all the noise comes from there so its coming off morrow see if it has any faults on it.when you drive it it'll sound like a old ldv post office van or old transit. the "top end noise wont be the tappets as you would here that as a mettalic "ting" wheras we've got a hard harsh coase noise.if i get any where ill post it here as it makes the car horrible to drive and your just waiting for it to go bang, thats how i feel anyhow Quote

If it's the PD engine he's got then he won't be able to time it using VAG-COM. Quote
snapper Posted February 19, 2008 Report Posted February 19, 2008 Check for any blows from the exhaust manifold, the noise from a blowing manifold is a common cause of a strange noise and the same sound was put up as a problem on a kit car forum i use and the problem was an exhaust blow. Worth a check. Quote
bigjohnboy Posted February 19, 2008 Author Report Posted February 19, 2008 thanks zorgman but it is a p.d engine. thanks snapper will check exhaust be for any major strip downs. Quote
zorgman Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 doing more checks on my car. te intake noise ive narrowed down to the airbox, brand new filter but using a tube i listned round the airbox seal and tats where the noise is from.too cold to do it today so bit luck migt be warmer morrow and let you know how i get on Quote
zorgman Posted February 23, 2008 Report Posted February 23, 2008 just had air box off and found that the gasket on filter wasnt sealing proper due to warpage on the plastic, sorted that out and its muc better. the deisel noise on mine as been narrowed down to the injectors needing cleaned up thats getting done wed ill report back Quote
